The alternative: Inconsistent tagging

Most sites out there tag their interactions inconsistently.

Inconsistent tagging comes in two main forms:

  • Conversion tagging: Only tagging interactions that lead to some form of conversion. Typically on the “add to cart” and “Buy” buttons.
  • Whim tagging: Tagging interactions you believe can be of interest on a whim.

We will explore both further, how they arise and what problems they make in the coming days.

However, both lead to the same result when doing your analysis.

It will be incomplete, for the simple reason that you can’t follow a clear trail of the interactions the customer’s made.

If you’ve done a user test at any time, you’ll quickly notice that customer’s do things in all ways but the one’s you want.
