Before moving on to Component Analytics, I will clarify the pitfalls of leaving interactions untagged.
When tagging interactions, the common approach is to tag converting interactions. Then tagging interactions you think are affecting the conversion throughout the site.
This is what I call Conversion Tagging and Whim Tagging respectively.
What is the alternative? Tagging all interactions.
What you achieve by tagging all interactions:
- Removes the bias of the person deciding what is interesting.
- You always have all data available when you want to start your analysis.
- Enables insight discovery by seeing analyzing different parts of the site.
Do yourself a favor, save your energy by not considering what to tag, tag anything the user may interact with.
You can then reverse engineer what the converting customer is doing.
And more importantly, you can use that information to improve the conversion on your site.
You don’t know what data is interesting until you’ve seen it.
On the subject of saving time, tomorrow I will talk about why you should automate the tagging.
