Customer knowledge and Engineers

The group with the least access to customer knowledge are engineers.

They’re not expected to understand the customer, or the business, as well as designers, product owners, and management.

Seeing as they’re the implementers of the organization’s strategy, their input is valuable.

Engineers make a lot of technical decisions, most of them very small.

Engineers that understand the customer, base these decisions on what they know about the customer.

They can also ask better questions to product owners and designers about the features they’re implementing.

Especially when there are technical hurdles to overcome.

The alternative is basing their technical decisions on technical expertise.

These decisions may make it harder to do product changes in the future.

As the features were created with incorrect assumptions.

Meaning, you’re slowly accumulating technical debt.
