Choosing a convention comes down to your site and your access to resources.
It’s easier to understand the guide below after reading some examples.
Choose Technical naming convention if:
- You have low reusability on the site. If every page on the site is unique, technical naming is more feasible than going through all pages to tag with content naming.
- You want to get started quickly. Tagging all your layout components is much faster than trying to tag the pages on the site.
Choose Content naming convention if:
- You want easier to read analytics reports.
- You want to compare how customers are doing on the same component but on different pages.
- You have pages with a lot of different components. Having the same technical component used in different contexts.
- You want to scale your analytics team. It’s easier to onboard analysts using the content naming convention.
The content naming convention leads to better analysis. It’s the one I recommend for most businesses.
You can also do a mix. Tagging your most visited pages with the content naming convention. Then use the technical naming convention as a fallback.
If you do the mix, you have to inform your analysts when pages are being retagged to the content convention. They may need to redo their automatic reports.
